There’s one thing I’ve noticed about every single project I’ve ever written. It always starts with random snippets. Whether it’s a conversation between two characters, some big emotional moment, or even some random slice of life scene, I always get something untethered to a greater whole.
That’s part of the fun of it. I get to take these random daydreams and stack them up and sort them out to put together something that resembles a story. Sometimes it works, most times it doesn’t. I have more unfinished pieces than you could imagine.
Sometimes I just have “vibes” for a story. In that case I make a Pinterest board and start building out a vision board of what I have in mind. Sometimes those vibes come from a song lyric and I go down a rabbit hole of making a playlist for a story that has no plot or characters. These little snippets tend to spin out and give me something to work off of. It’s fascinating how the brain finds the story behind anything you offer it.
I would love to get back to finding my more creative side for contemporary pieces. I have one idea in mind, but I feel out of practice with the kind of writing I really want it to be. That lyrical and deep prose that feels almost like poetry without being “purple prose.”
I’m thinking of following the book “The Artist’s Way.” I’ve seen a few people have really great success with it to reopen their creativity and inspiration. I don’t lack for story options, but I don’t feel as connected to how I truly write anymore. I think it’s because I haven’t let myself just ramble for a bit before finding the point 😛
Hope you’re having better luck with your creativity.
Happy Writing!
Rachel
