Here’s some honesty for you. I’ve tried to write three different posts. I scrapped all of them. Why? Either they were too vulnerable and I worried I was sharing too much, or I thought they were boring and whiney after rereading them, or I was suddenly very worried about what other people would say.
This all comes down to the Critic being very very loud the past few weeks.
Am I still crushing my current discovery draft? Yes. Is it slower than the last couple of weeks? Also yes. But that’s okay. I’m now in the in-between scenes before the “plot” really kicks off…and I have no idea what the plot actually is beyond the relationship between the two main characters. Not having a solid plot makes my Critic very loud.
I’m a big fan of people who can write based on “vibes.” They know how they want people to feel when they read the work, and focus more on those emotions and less on a gripping plot.
Discovery Drafting
This is the key purpose of Discovery Drafting. Telling yourself the story, figuring out the plot points, and basically discovering what the book is about.
I have no idea what this book is about. I’m having a blast.
Is the writing good? Meh. Are the characters interesting? Uh…they’re pretty flat right now. Is it fun? Heck yeah.
That’s all that matters in a Discovery Draft. All that fancy stuff can come later. Sure, a cleaner draft means a smoother edit, but for this story, I don’t think that matters so much.
I’m still having fun, so I’m going to keep writing.
Happy Writing!
Rachel
