Discovery Drafting – 20,000 Words Down!

My, oh my. I’ve recently crossed 20k words on my current discovery draft. I’m still having A BLAST writing it. I’m still desperately clinging to the fun part of the writing — the anything-goes, no plot only vibes, it is what it is style of writing. This very much feels like the old writing habit I used to have. I can sit for HOURS and just go and go and go.

Why?

Because I’m not concerned about the arcs, plot, or how other readers will feel about it. I am the ideal reader of this one. The only one who has to like it is me. Bonus points: My friend group has similar book taste right now, so they are also a good sounding board.

It must have some kind of plot starting right?

Yes! My favorite part of discovery drafting is the DISCOVERY of it. I am learning what my characters want, how they react, and more importantly where this is all going. I think free writing also opens me up to the idea of “but then” and “what now?” I’m not worried about how to get from one point to the next, but instead am looking at “What is the next point in the journey?”

I think what is becoming clear is the character journies. For my main character, it will be about finding agency and strength while accepting her flaws. As for the secondary main character, I’m still working that out.

All I know plot-wise so far is that there are curses, monsters, and power struggles coming into focus. I’m a big fan of slow-burn, fated love stories so I’m guessing that’s where it’s going. I also like a damsel-in-distress who turns badass. I just haven’t quite figured out how that will look for my main girl.

For now, I’m just enjoying the ride for what it is.

Happy Writing!

Rachel
