Most Writing Days Look the Same

Most writing days look exactly the same. They are typing, reading, typing some more, brainstorming, and more typing. Honestly, it’s super fun but gets monotonous if you don’t like your story. To be honest, it gets monotonous even if you really love your story.

It’s a sad truth that at some point you probably will be sick of the story even if you enjoy it. I know I’ve gotten to that point in both the first draft and my first revision. But, then I hit one of those moments of breakthrough or inspiration, or I get to a scene you love, then everything speeds up again. Those times feel like you can’t type the words fast enough.

Most writers love HAVING WRITTEN not actually doing the writing or getting themselves to the writing. It’s the same as most exercise – going for the workout is a chore, the physical movement is torture, but the feeling afterwards is pure accomplishment (or just like you’ve been hit by a truck if you’re out of practice…I have experience with that one). Writing is the same thing. Just like exercise, it always feels better after you’ve been writing routinely for a while but building the habit is so so hard.

That’s where I’m at right now. I’m re-building my writing habit/routine/ritual. Whatever you want to call it, I haven’t quite gotten back into the swing of it. Some patterns have come up as I’ve let myself kind of write as I’d like to: I tend to write every other day as opposed to every day, I like writing either in the afternoon around my lunch hour, after work before dinner when things aren’t hectic yet, or after dinner when I can sneak off for the rest of the evening to my own little world. The amount of time I can get writing varies greatly depending on which scenario I choose.

The biggest thing I keep in mind is that coming to the writing should be enjoyable. Music, tea, maybe a snack, something should accompany me to my writing session to make sure I am getting the reinforcement that it’s going to be a good time.

Do you have a writing routine? Are you trying to get back into a habit?

Happy Writing!

  1. I try to write every day, in one form or another, even if it’s just to practice and discard. I too enjoy having written, and that’s one of the best feelings ever, as grinding as the process itself can be. Anyway, thanks for this honest capturing of the writing process!
